Transportation

The transport sector is a cornerstone of a more efficient and competitive economy, connecting production centres with markets, facilitating the movement of people and goods, and supporting growth across industry, trade and tourism. Investment in this sector is particularly important for turning Jordan’s geographic location into an economic advantage and strengthening its role as a regional transport and logistics hub. Developing transport infrastructure and integrating different modes of transport also help reduce business costs, improve market access and expand investment opportunities throughout the Kingdom.

The Social Security Investment Fund (SSIF) invests in a range of strategic companies and projects in the transport sector, including Jordan National Shipping Lines and Royal Jordanian Airlines. Its investments also extend to infrastructure financing. Through Daman Leasing Company, SSIF financed the Amman–Zarqa Bus Rapid Transit project, contributing to the development of public transport services and improved connectivity between the two cities.

SSIF is strengthening its presence in the sector through a 7% equity stake in Aqaba Railway Company, which is responsible for the Aqaba–Shidiya–Ma’an Railway project. The project forms part of a strategic Jordanian–Emirati partnership to develop rail transport and connect production sites with Aqaba’s ports. In addition to its equity stake in the company, SSIF will contribute to financing the project through the alliance of Jordanian commercial banks, combining equity investment with project financing.

The project’s foundation stone was laid in October 2026 in the presence of His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein and His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. The project aims to improve the efficiency of freight movement and enhance access to regional and global markets.

The project’s investment value is further strengthened by its integration with SSIF’s existing investments in Jordan Phosphate Mines Company and Arab Potash Company. It is expected to reduce transport costs, improve operational efficiency and enhance export competitiveness, while reducing the environmental impact associated with heavy road transport. The project also forms a key part of the broader effort to develop Jordan’s national railway network, opening prospects for future investment opportunities in the sector.
